Introduction to Surat Thani Travel Guide

Frequently referred to simply as Surat, Surat Thani is the biggest of Thailand’s southern provinces. It is located on the western coast of the Gulf of Thailand. Chumphon, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Krabi, Phang Nga, and Ranong are neighboring provinces.

In prehistoric times, Surat Thani was inhabited by Semang and Malayan tribes. The city of Chaiya in Surat Thani has artifacts of the Srivijaya empire and was most likely the kingdom’s regional capital until the 13th century. After the fall of the Srivijaya, the territory was divided into three cities: Chaiya, Thatong (now Kanchanadit), and Khirirat Nikhom. In 1899, they were all merged into an one province called Chaiya. During King Rama VI’s visit in 1915, the province was given the name ‘Surat Thani’.

Surat Thani is home to many famous islands including Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao, and the Mu Ko Ang Thong Marine National Park. During their stay, visitors may go snorkeling or diving to explore spectacular coral reefs, in addition to relaxing on lovely beaches.
