Introduction to Phang Nga Travel Guide

Phang Nga is one of Thailand’s southern provinces, bordered to the west by the Andaman Sea and to the south by Phang Nga Bay. Ranong, Surat Thani, and Krabi are surrounding provinces. To the south lies the Phuket Province, which is linked to Phang Nga by the Sarasin Bridge.

Phang Nga was formally formed in 1809 under King Rama II’s reign. When the Burmese invaded Takua Pa, Takua Thung, and Thalang that year, King Rama II assembled immigrants to a newly established town called Phang Nga. King Rama V visited Phang Nga in 1890 and documented the town’s status as a magnificent fertile town. In 1916, the town’s status was changed to a province.

The Surin and Similan island groups are famed for their wonderful, unspoiled beaches and spectacular underwater scenery that attract divers from all over the world to the Andaman coast of Phang Nga. Khao Lak, located on Phang Nga’s mainland, is a coastal park with unique birds, exotic wildlife, and beautiful waterfalls. The province is also home to James Bond Island, a needle-shaped limestone rock in the sea that appeared in the 1974 film The Man with the Golden Gun.
