Sukhothai was the first capital city of Siam, constructed in the 13th century by the renowned King Ramkhamhaeng. The Sukhothai Kingdom merged with the Ayutthaya Kingdom in 1438. The province was formerly known as Sawankhalok, but it was renamed Sukhothai in 1939.

The Sukhothai Historical Park, constructed by King Ramkhamhaeng, is the most well-known landmark in Sukhothai. The temples and monuments of the province have been carefully preserved. Sukhothai Historical Park has also been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Sukhothai has done a remarkable job of conserving and restoring the ancient city remains, which are scattered around Sukhothai Historical Park.
